Assam is a beautiful land of red
river and blue hills, green tea and black oil, rarest of flora and
fauna, exotic wild life and a cultural heritage of India. The original
name of Assam was Asom.

pop. 26,638,407), c.30,000 sq mi (77,700 sq km), extreme
NE India. Dispur is the capital.Almost completely separated
from India by Bangladesh, Assam is bordered by Nagaland
and Manipur on the east, Mizoram, Tripura, and Meghalaya
on the south, Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan

in the north and west and West Bengal
in the west. The most important river in the state is the
Brahmaputra, which enters in the northeast and flows in
a southwesterly direction. The river is navigable from the
Bay of Bengal to the city of Dibrugarh. The state of Assam
has a humid, subtropical climate, with extremely heavy rainfall
that ranges from about 1,800 to nearly 2,500 mm (about 70
to nearly 100 in) per year. The average temperatures in
January range from 10° to 23° C (50° to 73° F); in July
average temperatures range from 26° to 32° C (79° to 90°
F).

Assam - the land where you find flowers
that are exquisitely beautiful, animals that are rare, and
a beleagured people that are proud and inviting. The orchid
is Assam's most celebrated flower, the most famous being
the Kopou Ful, a Vandaceous Orchid known by its botanical
name of Rhynchostylis retusa. To the orchid enthusiast of
the West it is also known as the Foxtail Orchid. This orchid
grows widely across Assam and is worn by young women on
their hair during the spring festival of Assam.
